Last month Bell Mobility started its day in court in Yellowknife over a class-action lawsuit related to 911 monthly fees in the Whitehorse area. James Anderson launched the suit–which has about 30,000 people involved–back in 2007, as he argued a 75 cent monthly fee should not be charged to those without 911 service.

According to a ruling made yesterday, the Northwest Territories Supreme Court agreed with Anderson the 911 charges were not justified (via CBC):

On Friday, Justice Ron Veale ruled Bell is liable to nearly 30,000 cellphone users in the N.W.T., Yukon and Nunavut who paid for 911 services they didn’t receive.

Out of the territories only Whitehorse had a 911 operator, whereas other residents had to dial a 10 digit number for emergency services. The lawyer representing the Andersons, Keith Landy says the ruling sets a precedent:

“Cellphone has become a necessity today. And by virtue of them having monthly fees to pay, and then having to pay a charge where the service isn’t provided, is certainly something that needed to be corrected in our view.”

Jason Laszlo from Bell Media Relations, said the ruling goes beyond what he believes the trial was initially about–and the company will appeal the verdict:

“We’re pleased the court ruled in our favour on the main issues certified for trial, and found that Bell Mobility is not required to provide live 911 operators. That is the responsibility of local governments,” he said in an email.

“But we will certainly appeal its decision on a matter that hadn’t even been certified for trial – i.e. whether customers in those areas are exempt from paying the fees charged to all customers nationally.”

The class-action lawsuit affects Bell customers who signed contracts before April 13, 2010 across the North.

Well SeatGeek hopes to remove this problem by collecting the ticket listings from over 120 resellers, then showing you which tickets are the best value.

Who would you like to see?

Find the event you wish to attend

Find the event you wish to attend

You can use SeatGeek to explore and see all the events happening near you. Or you can search by performer, event, or venue. Once you find and select an event the tickets can be sorted by their price or Deal Score, (only if the venue’s layout is available) which is a number dependent on a ticket’s price and location that (allegedly) shows you which tickets are “the most bang for your dollar.” After selecting a ticket you are shown a breakdown of the price, the exact seat location (sometimes even the view from your seat is shown), the number of tickets available, and notes from the seller. Once you press Buy Now you’ll be redirected to the ticket reseller’s checkout.

I really liked SeatGeek. I had no issues finding tickets to any performance or game that I knew were coming. I didn’t even have to go through the painful ordeal of entering in my credit card information on my iPhone, because I discovered that I could email myself a link to the ticket reseller’s checkout, then buy the tickets on my iMac.

According to CNET, Apple has pulled controversial app Bang with Friends from the App Store, after it debuted last week. Titled BWF Official when it was in the App Store, the matching service–which recently surpassed 1 million users–allowed users to connect their Facebook accounts and find friends who were “down to bang” each other.

“We’re working with Apple to figure out exactly why,” a Bang With Friends spokesperson told CNET.

Co-founder Colin Hodge confirmed with Valleywag Apple had removed their app from the App Store. Users can enter their email on the BWF website to get notified when the app will return to the App Store. At this point in time, it appears too early to conclude whether or not Apple was flexing its censorship over the app’s intended service.

Anyone have luck (or get lucky) using this app?

Rogers has noted their LTE Max network which uses 2100 MHz and 2600 MHz band to deliver faster speeds has expanded to locations in Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick:

  • Brooks, Cochrane and Canmore, Alta.
  • Sydney, N.S.
  • Muskoka, Ont.
  • Sault Ste. Marie, Ont
  • Moncton, N.B., area.

The iPhone 5 does not run on these bands but Android devices such as the Galaxy S4 and HTC One do, and BlackBerry Z10/Q10. As for the ‘regular’ LTE network which supports the iPhone 5, Rogers informs us the following locations have gone live:

  • Saint-Georges, Que.
  • Bathurst, N.B.

If you’re in the latter two areas, let us know how those LTE speeds are!
